Bellator 220 Preview

2 title fights top the bill in California.

Another great weekend of MMA action is upon us with Bellator 220 on our screens.

Bellator 220 has a 5 fight main card stacked with some of the best talents in the promotion. Kicking off the main card is a lightweight bout between Gaston Bolanos and Nathan Stolen. Balanos is 4-1 and has yet to go the distance in his 5 fights. With 3 finishes in a row, Bolanos is looking to gather some serious momentum inside the cage. Stolen on the other hand is looking to get himself back in the win column after suffering 3 submission defeats in a row. After a promising start to his career, going 6-0 he has slid, going 1-4 in his last 5 and hasn’t won since 2017.

A rematch is next up, as Phil Davis will look to settle the score against Liam McGeary. The two previously met back in November 2016 at Bellator 163, in which Davis defeated McGeary in a 5 round war which was for the Bellator Light Heavyweight Title. Since then McGeary has gone 2-2 with his last outing against Mohamed Lawal back in December 2018. Davis, on the other hand, has lost the 205lbs title to now double champ Ryan Bader and has also gone 2-2 with his last fight in November 2018 against Vadim Nemkov. The pair will meet again in a fight which will determine a serious number one contender for Bader’s title.

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson has endured a frustrating 3 years in the Bellator cage. Having gone 3-3 with 2 unsuccessful title shots, Henderson is heading towards another 155lbs title shot against newly crowned champion Michael Chandler. His opponent, Adam Piccolotti started his Bellator stint 5-0 and was on his way to a potential lightweight title eliminator but in his last four has gone 2-2. Both men are looking to get back to the top of the rankings and earn a potential title shot.

In the co-main event of the evening, we have our first title fight of the night as Ilima-Lei Macfarlane will look to defend her Flyweight title for the third time against Veta Arteaga. Macfarlane is coming off a successful title defence in her native Hawaii back in December against Valérie Létourneau. As Macfarlane looks to improve her already flawless record to 10-0, Arteaga will be aiming to dethrone Bellator’s only Women’s Flyweight Champion. Veta is coming off two wins against former title challenger Emily Ducote and Holland’s own Denise Kielholtz. Arteaga will want to stay away from the submission game of Macfarlane as she looks to capture the Flyweight title.

In the main event of the evening, we will see another round of the Welterweight grand prix. With Rory MacDonald being champion every fight against him will be for his 170lbs belt. Standing in the way of MacDonald moving through the bracket is MMA veteran, Jon Fitch. At 41 years old and with 17 years of professional experience, he finally made his Bellator debut back in May 2018 defeating Paul Daley. He will attempt to use his wrestling to take the title in just his second fight with the promotion.

Rory MacDonald has faced the best in his MMA career to date and moved up in weight to take on Gegard Mousasi for the Middleweight Title back in September 2018. After coming up short, MacDonald blamed a lack of motivation for his poor performance against Mousasi. After capturing the Welterweight Title in January 2018, he will look to make his first defence against Fitch. It promises to be a fantastic night of action in at the SAP Center in California
