Bellator 221 Main Card Preview

A look ahead to the stacked main card in Illinois

Bellator hits Illinois this weekend as we see the Lightweight title up for grabs and another round of the Welterweight grand prix. Kicking off the main card is a heavyweight bout between Jake Hager and T.J Jones. Hager made his MMA debut back in January at Bellator 214 and submitted his opponent in the first round. Hager’s wrestling credentials are there to be admired and will look to rely on these skills to extend his record to 2-0. His opponent T.J Jones doesn’t have much to show for himself and his last recorded professional fight was more than one decade ago and against the life-long wrestler like Hager, there’s no way he stops him from taking him down and then taking him out.

Next up is a featherweight bout between unbeaten A.J McKee and Bellator veteran Pat Curran. McKee has a current record of 13-0 with all fights coming inside the Bellator cage. A.J last fought in December at Bellator 212 and submitted Daniel Crawford in the very first round. McKee is on the verge of a potential title shot against Patricio Pitbull should he win on Saturday night. Former two-time Featherweight world champion Pat Curran is considered as the gatekeeper to the title and is on a 3 fight win streak although this is his first fight in 19 months. Will we see the emergence of a title contender or will the old guard rise back to the top?

The co-main event of the night will feature the first semi-final of the welterweight grand prix as Douglas Lima goes up against Michael Venom Page. Douglas Lima lost the Welterweight title to Rory MacDonald last year and started the grand prix off with a win against Andrey Koreshkov via submission. Lima will be looking to put an end to the hype train of MVP and put himself in the final and a potential rematch against MacDonald. British sensation Michael Venom Page has a record of 14-0 and put his rivalry with Paul Daley to bed as he beat ‘Semtex’ in February to advance to the semi-final of the tournament. MVP has his years of training all forms of striking make him a boxer, a kickboxer and a well-rounded martial artist.

The main event of the evening is a super fight between two champions as Michael Chandler squares off against Patrício Freire. Chandler is the newly crowned Lightweight champion after beating Brent Primus in December 2018 at Bellator 212 and will be looking make his first defence of his 155lbs title. He puts his belt on the line against two-time and current Featherweight champion Patricio Freire. “Pitbull” has nothing to lose in this fight and will be looking to avenge his brother’s loss to Chandler 3 years ago.

Pitbull’s title is not at stake and if he is not victorious in this bout, he will still be commended for going up in weight to take on this challenge. These two men are the most dominant fighters in their respective weight classes in Bellator, and arguably among the most dominant worldwide outside of Bellator. The fact both are multiple-time champions and only have four losses each tells you everything you need to know. All of the above promises to make it an incredible night of action in Illinois.
