A closer look at the action from a fantastic night in Illinois

As Bellator hit Illinois this weekend, the card was topped by a lightweight title fight between champion Michael Chandler and featherweight champion Patricio Freire. Kicking off the main card was Jake Hager against TJ Jones at heavyweight. Hager formerly know as Jack Swagger in the WWE made his MMA debut back in January and as expected submitted his opponent in the first round. This outcome was no different on Saturday night as he took Jones down early and after 2 unsuccessful submission attempts, Hager eventually submitted Jones via Arm Triangle Choke in the first round. With that victory, he extended his record to 2-0 inside the Bellator cage.

Next up was a highly anticipated featherweight matchup between the unbeaten AJ McKee and veteran Pat Curran. A win for McKee would put him right into contention for a shot against Patricio Freire for the 145lbs belt and that’s what McKee did. In an underwhelming fight, Curran struggled to get any offence going and the 3-inch reach disadvantage was clear to see. AJ McKee saw out a unanimous decision victory to extend his unbeaten record to 14-0.

The co-main event of the evening was the first semi-final of the Welterweight Grand Prix between Douglas Lima and Michael Venom Page. As expected the first round was a chess match with Lima trying to get to grips with the range and timing of Venom Page. At the start of the second round, MVP landed a right hand on the top of the head of Lima which wobbled the former champion. As the Brit lunged in, Lima swept MVP off his feet with a low kick and as Michael tried to get back to his feet, Lima landed an uppercut which instantly knocked MVP out cold and with that came to his first MMA loss. Douglas Lima now moves to the final of the Grand Prix and will face the winner of Rory MacDonald and Neman Gracie with a chance to win back the belt he lost to MacDonald last year and also earn himself $1 Million.

Patricio Freire stepped up in weight to try and become Bellator’s second ‘Champ Champ’ as he challenged Michael Chandler for the Lightweight title. It was a cagey opening 45 seconds but ‘Pitbull’ landed an overhand right to the back of the ear of Chandler and put the American on the floor. With Chandler face down and not defending himself, the referee was forced to step in and stop the fight at just 1:01 of the first round. Patricio Pitbull now joins Ryan Bader as a two divisional Bellator champion.
