Bellator Newcastle Results: Patricky Pitbull wins controversial split decision, Aaron Chalmers falls to first defeat

It was a night of shocks for the debut of Bellator MMA’s European Series, including Aaron Chalmers’ first pro MMA loss

Bellator MMA started their European Series in Newcastle, England, and it did not disappoint, with a night of fights which showed the best up and comers in British MMA, in front of a raucous crowd at the Utilita Arena.

The main event saw Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire face Ryan Scope. This would be a big step up for Scope, but there wasn’t much difference between the two in the first round. Pitbull scored a flying knee halfway through the round rocking Scope but the Sunderland fighter managed to recover and made it through to the second round.

The second round was more controlled from Scope, even though there was an early scare at the start, but the Sunderland fighter would control the round leading into the third. Scope continued to impress in the third with decent takedown defence against the Brazilian, and he finished the round strong with a Rear Naked Choke attempt. Scope looked like he had done enough to win the fight, but Pitbull would take the split decision win, much to the displeasure of the Newcastle crowd.

The Co-Main event of the evening saw Newcastle local lad Aaron Chalmers face of against American Corey Browning. The first round saw Chalmers control the action, with a flurry of strikes which wobbled Browning. Chalmers thought he had knocked Browning out, as he started to walk away from his opponent, but the ref let the action continue.

The second round was all for Browning, as he got on top of Chalmers and controlled the action from there. Chalmers went into the third round for the first time in his career, but wouldn’t last long. The fight went to the ground again, and Browning managed to lock in a heel hook to take the submission win. Browning continues his good start to his Bellator career and can now add the scalp of Chalmers to go along with his win over Baby Slice.

Chris Bungard pulled off an upset by beating former two weight BAMMA champion Terry Brazier, by submission after 2:06 of the first round. A fight that was being billed as the ‘Battle of Britain’ did not disappoint. Bungard controlled the fight from the off, and it wasn’t long before he had Brazier on the floor. Bungard was then able to take the back and lock in a tight Rear Naked Choke.

Fabian Edwards and Lee Chadwick opened up the main card. Edwards controlled the fight from the off, and comfortably won rounds one and three. The second round seemed close, but again the undefeated fighter from Birmingham controlled the veteran Chadwick. Edwards came close to finishing on several occasions, but would have to settle for a unanimous decision win (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).

The prelims got of to a storming start, as all of the first five fights ended in the first round! Joe Calboutin, Kieran Lister, Tommy Quinn and Ashley Reece all won with 1st round KO’s. However there was upset for Heavyweight Tony Mustard as his fight with Mindaugas Serve was finished early due to an injury. After 1:14 of the first round, it looked like Mustard dislocated two of his fingers, and the pain was obvious as the ref called the fight.

Elsewhere Calboutin carried on where he left off at the weigh-ins, making easy work of Milad Ahady, finishing him with a well timed right, which knocked Ahady out cold. Kieran Lister continued the run of Northern fighters winning, with a clean left uppercut which took opponent Davie McLaughlin to the ground. The early finishes would continue as Tommy Quinn would finish Martin Hudson by TKO after only three minutes. The early finishes would continue as Ashley Reece finished John Ross by TKO in round one, in a fight that looked a total mismatch.

As the prelims continued we actually saw a third round, but Luke Westwood wouldn’t want to be in it long as he beat Richard Kallos by TKO. The next fight would give us our first submission win of the evening in another first round finish, after he caught Maciej Gierszewski by rear naked choke. Nathan Rose would then win the next bout, when he knocked out Ranjeet Baria with a second left of the first round. The good feelings would continue as local fighter Cal Ellenor would make Nathan Greyson tap after 3:49 of the first round by way of Rear Naked Choke.

The prelims closed out with two decent fights, as “Judo” Jimmy Wallhead went the distance and got the decision win over Abner Lloveras (30-27, 29-28, 30-27), the last fight of the prelims was an absolute war as Arunas Andriuskevicus got a TKO win over James Mulheron due to a medical stoppage with only 42 seconds of the third round gone.
