Cage Warriors 111 Preview

A closer look at the double header of title fights in London.

Cage Warriors end their 2019 schedule with a return to London for Cage Warriors 111, topped by 2 world title fights in the light-heavyweight and middleweight divisions. The first title on the line will be the Light-Heavyweight championship as current king Modestas Bukauskas will look to defend his crown for the first time against Riccardo Nosiglia. Modestas won the title in June against Marthin Hamlet via TKO in Round 4 at the Night Of Champions. He holds a pro-MMA record of 9-2 with a Cage Warriors record of 4-1. Across the cage is Marthin Hamlet, who is making his Cage Warriors debut after an impressive run on the European circuit with an 8-1 record and has a chance to claim gold in his first bout.

Next up will be the featherweight bout between champion Mads Burnell and England’s own Steve Aimable. Burnell dethroned then-champion Dean Trueman back in June. Formerly of the UFC, Burnell has dominated the Cage Warriors scene since arriving, picking up back to back Japanese Neck Tie submissions, first over Ahmed Villa and then over Trueman.  Boasting a 14-5 record and a 4-1 run in Cage Warriors, Aimable was originally supposed to challenge for the belt but failed to make the 145lb cut off. This fight will proceed as a non title fight.

Topping the card in London is a rematch. After their majority draw at Cage Warriors 106 in June, champion James Webb will face Nathias Frederick to determine the middleweight champion of the world. James Webb claimed the 185lb title against Thomas Robertsen in March via an Arm Triangle Choke and will be looking to make his second defence of his title. The challenger Frederick recovered from an 0-2 start to his career and has proceeded to win his next 7 fights which set up a date with Webb earlier in the year. Frederick has deducted a point in the first outing after dumping Webb on the top of his head and it ended up ultimately costing him the fight. As the fight ended in a draw, it was Webb who retained the title and it has set up a tasty rematch in the capital.
