Introducing Senegalese Wrestling and the undefeated champion who is transitioning to MMA

This weekend ARES FC 1 debuts on UFC Fight Pass with a stacked card full of talent. The talent on the card varies from Olympians to UFC veterans. However, the standout talent on the card is a Senegalese wrestler who is making their MMA debut. Oumar Kane aka Reug Reug stands at a massive 6″5 and weighs 265lbs. He is undefeated in Senegalese wrestling and is hoping his fight style will transition over to MMA.

In Senegal the sport has the same level of popularity as football. It’s a part of the culture over there. Competitors are infamous and usually compete in front of crowds full of people. Competitors can earn decent money, however, now have the chance to become global stars. If successful not only would the fighter become a star the sport would accelerate with them.

Information about the sport is not the easiest to come by. They were best explained by Mens Health, which is extracted below.

“The more traditional, hands-free version is reserved for local village matches, while stadium fights routinely feature devastating jabs and punches. Whatever weapon is used – hand, elbow, knee, or an opponent’s own bodyweight – the winner is the first to throw his adversary to the ground by lifting him up and over. Typically, a match will last no longer than the 90 seconds it takes a skilled fighter to upend a challenger, to the delight of the crowd.” (Extract via Mens Health)

More information on the rules and tradition can be found in the link above.

Oumar Kane is still only 27 and has been training in MMA for quite sometime, spending time in New York to improve his skillset. His debut is against an extremely tough opponent in Sofiane Boukichou (6-3), who is 5-1 in his last 6 fights. This is going to be a huge test for Kane who is hoping put the Heavyweight division on notice with a win.

Check out his journey so far below.
