ONE Century Part 2: ‘Burmese Python’ Aung La N Sang gets the TKO in Tokyo

Bibiano Fernandes settles his beef with Kevin Belingon with a decisive win. Giorgio Petrosyan wins the Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix, securing a $1 million paycheck

Wrapping up an incredible weekend of MMA action came ONE Century Part 2 live from Tokyo. The second stacked card of the day drew vocal support inside the historic Japanese Sumo hall – Ryogoku Kokugikan as more fans were able to get there after the reopening of transport links in the aftermath of Typhoon Hagibis.

In strong voice were the Burmese fans who had travelled to see their hero Aung La N Sang defend his Light Heavyweight belt against UFC veteran and ONE Heavyweight champion Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera. They were not disappointed as Aung La rocked Vera with a TKO in the second round. Both men came out swinging from the offset, keeping the action standing up searching for a knock out punch. In Round 2, a spinning elbow from Aung La stunned Vera who stumbled back against the cage and covered up against a barrage of shots from the Burmese Python. Seeing no reply from Vera, the referee stepped in to call a stop to the fight handing Aung La the victory.

In the Bantamweight title fight, Bibiano ‘The Flash’ Fernandes and Kevin ‘The Silencer’ Belingon met for the fourth time to contest the belt. Fernandes’ game plan was clear from the outset – he wanted to get Belingon to the ground and use his ju-jitsu. The first round saw Fernandes dominating Belingon on the ground, but unable to secure a submission. He had more success in the second round when he took the Filipino fighter’s back and sunk in a rear naked choke. With a decisive victory, this must close the door on this rivalry for the time being.

In the Featherweight Kickboxing Grand Prix, Giorgio ‘The Doctor’ Petrosyan put on a kickboxing masterclass showing the clinical precision for which he is known. Samy Sana had looked excellent on previous outings against Yodsanklai Iwe Fairtex and Dzhabar Askerov, yet was unable to handle a superior Petrosyan. Petrosyan seemed to have some kind of sixth sense, avoiding Sana’s strikes by millimetres, yet sliding punches and kicks through Sana’s defences with ease. Petrosyan took home the US$1 million prize that was on the line for this event. Asked at the post fight press conference what would be next for the star, Chatri Sityodtong told the media that he was working on getting more top-level kickboxers to join the promotion and also suggested a match up against Yodsanklai was in the works.

Elsewhere on the card, hometown hero and Japanese legend Shinya ‘Tobikan Judan’ Aoki faced Team Lakay’s Honario Banario in a lightweight bout. It was a different Aoki to the one we saw on his last outing against Christian Lee. This Aoki was clearly wanted to take a scalp and make a statement in front of his home fans. As soon as the fight started, Aoki went immediately for a bodylock takedown and swiftly locked in a D’arce choke. Honario had no choice but to tap. A clearly delighted Aoiki ran out of the cage and went on a victory lap of the stadium delighting fans.
