ONE Championship Century Part 1: The Lee siblings put on a show in Tokyo

Angela Lee Defends Atomweight Belt. Wins for Demetrious Johnson and Christian Lee

ONE Championship Century Part 1 almost didn’t happen. Typhoon Hagibis hit Tokyo on Saturday leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to CEO Chatri Sidyodtong, the emergency generators for the stadium only arrived 4 hours before the start of the event. Thankfully for martial arts fans, Part 1 of this double card went off as planned with some spectacular fights.

The two fights of the morning both featured the Lee siblings – Angela and Christian. In the main event, Angela Lee successfully defended her Atomweight belt against Chinese fighter Xiong Jing Nan in a nail biting five round bout. Both fighters tried to make the most of their preferred fighting styles. Xiong threw heavy punches trying to end the fight with a KO, whereas Lee doggedly pursued takedowns to utilise her superior grappling. In the 5th round, Lee landed an impressive suplex takedown and proceeded to dominate Xiong on the ground. Eventually, she locked in a deep rear naked choke and tapped out Xiong with 18 seconds left on the clock. This is a big win for Lee, who had lost to Xiong in their previous outing at Strawweight and needed the win for a return to form.

In the final of the Lightweight Grand Prix, Christian Lee faced off against Saygid ‘Dagi’ Guseyn Arslanaliev. Given Dagi’s dominant record of first round finishes, many expected a win for him, particularly as Lee had taken the fight on only 10 days’ notice. Despite Dagi throwing heavy punches in the first round, Lee showed he has a granite chin, but more importantly utilised his wrestling skills scoring big takedowns and dominating the Dagestani fighter on the ground. Round 2 and 3 saw more of the same, with a clearly exhausted Dagi outclassed by Lee. In dominating the fighter many had thought was the toughest fighter in the Lightweight division, Lee has proved to his doubters that he belongs at the top of the roster.

In the final of the Flyweight Grand Prix, Demetrious Johnson defeated Filipino Danny Kingad by unanimous decision. The fight was a fast-paced bout with exciting scrambles from both men. Despite a great effort from Kingad, experience prevailed and the former UFC veteran secured the judges’ decision.
