One Championship King of the Jungle: Reviews and Highlights

Closed Door Event in Singapore Crowns Two New Champions

In the wake of the Covid 19 global spread, ONE Championship made ONE King of the Jungle a closed-door event. The absence of an audience made for a strange viewing experience, particularly when ring announcer Dominic Lau introduced each fighter with his usual gusto to be met by complete silence. No doubt some fighters would have benefited from the less charged atmosphere, whereas others may have suffered. Despite the quiet, a great night of fights still ensued.

Janet ‘JT’ Todd beats Stamp Fairtex to take Atomweight Kickboxing Belt

Janet Todd put a dent in Stamp Fairtex’s plans to become a three-sport champion (MMA, Kickboxing and Muay Thai), by taking away her Kickboxing belt. It was the second time these ladies had met, last time Stamp defeating Todd under a Muay Thai ruleset. This time, Todd had an excellent first round showing off her speed and agility landing some precise shots. Stamp came back strong in subsequent rounds and a very close back and forth went to the judges’ scorecard for the split decision to a surprised looking Todd.

Muay Thai legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao wins inaugural Strawweight Muay Thai Belt

Sam-A has won most Muay Thai belts going in his long career of over 400 bouts and now he has one more for the collection. Facing Sam-A was a 20-year-old Australian challenger Rocky Ogden, who is trained by Australian Muay Thai veteran John Wayne Parr. Sam-A’s performance was pure class throughout all 5 rounds, demonstrating that his reflexes are still as sharp as they ever were. The older fighter landed lightening fast kicks and striking combinations, but also ducked and weaved to avoid Ogden’s counters. After 5 rounds, the judges unanimously gave the victory to Sam-A.

Hometown fighter Amir Khan suffers R1 submission

1.39 was all it took for Japanese fighter Kimihiro Eto (17-5) to submit Singaporean Amir Khan (12-7) with a rear naked choke. Once a potential high flyer in the lightweight division, Khan has suffered a number of losses recently that have damaged his prospects. A three-fight losing streak (Eduard Folayang, Ariel Sexton and Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev) was broken with a split decision win over Ev Ting in his last outing (which was more to do with bad judging than anything else). With another loss, this puts the Evolve fighter’s future title potential in serious doubt.

Denice Zamboanga wins title shot against Angela Lee

A very dominant performance by Filipina Zamboanga (7-0) against Japanese veteran Mei VV Yamaguchi (21-12) confirmed her as a threat in the women’s atomweight division. Zamboanga demonstrated excellent takedown defence and powerful striking causing visible damage to her opponent. Despite not getting the finish, the judge’s decision was unanimous and ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed that the performance was enough to have her face Angela Lee for the belt.

Troy Worthen extends his undefeated win streak

One to watch in the Bantamweight division, US fighter Troy Worthen (7-0) defeated Mark Aberlardo (19-7) by unanimous decision. Worthen, a former college wrestler now trains at Evolve MMA and seems to have improved his striking considerably from previous outings. Despite a spirited and forceful performance from Aberlardo, Worthen made best use of his wrestling skills to control Aberlardo for much of the fight eventually securing the judges’ decision.
