ONE Championship: Masters of Destiny – Preview

Fighters speak to MMA Latest News ahead of Friday's tournament

ONE Championship returns to Kuala Lumpur this Friday, July, 12.  MMA Latest News sat down with some of the fighters here in the capital of Malaysia to find out more about their preparation and expectations.

The headline bout is a rematch of the Kickboxing Featherweight World Grand Prix Quarter Final between Giorgio “The Doctor” Petrosyan (99-3-2) and Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy (159-34-2).  This fight will take place after their earlier bout fought out in May was later ruled a no-contest.

Speaking today, Petchmorakot spoke of the “nightmare” he faced learning of the no-contest ruling, two days before joining the monk-hood in celebration of his victory.  He says after his period of contemplation and returning to the gym, he decided to take the fight to prove he was the real winner.  In terms of preparation, Petchmorakot has been honing his knowledge of the kickboxing ruleset to ensure that this time, he wins without any criticism.

Petrosyan told us of his shock in the ring when hearing of the judges’ decision, and his subsequent happiness of hearing ONE Championship’s decision to declare the fight as a no-contest. One mistake that he told us about from the last fight was not having his brother in his corner — a decision that will be rectified this coming Friday. He promises to show a “new Petrosyan,” and prove his continued dominance.

The co-main event features Angela Lee (9-1-0) vs. Michelle Nicolini (5-2-0).  Both women are extremely accomplished grapplers. Based on their records, Nicolini has the edge on the ground, although Lee probably has an advantage when standing. Lee promises a “beautiful and brutal fight” with an early finish. Nicolini tells us she has been working hard since her last loss to Tiffany Teo in Singapore in November of 2018, and that she has been focusing on her stand up, footwork and wrestling. Lee’s approach to this bout will be to focus on striking, whereas Nicolini will be looking for a quick take down to finish on the ground.

MMA Latest News also spoke to the fighter to watch — Aleksi Toivonen (6-1-0), who will be making his ONE Championship debut after signing with Evolve Fight Team earlier this year. The Finnish grappling sensation was picked up by Evolve MMA and moved to Singapore in February.  The two-time IBJJF no-gi champion told MMA Latest News that he is taking full advantage of the coaching prowess of his new team. Toivonen will face Akihiro ‘Superjap’ Fujisawa (5-1-0), who at 39, is an older fighter, but Toivonen believes that this does not give him any advantages explaining that “age is just a number.”  The 27-year-old Finn is excited to be in what he considers “the best flyweight division in the world. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best” he told us.

Friday’s event will also feature some local heroes.  Ev ‘ET’ Ting (16-6-0) is a Malaysian/New Zealand fighter who is fighting in KL for the first time in two years.  Ting is an experienced fighter in the ONE lightweight division, and plans to fight strategically, avoiding heavy shots, and going for a finish.  He will face Daichi Abe (6-3-0) — a former Pancrase welterweight and UFC fighter who is making is second appearance in the promotion.
