Post-Fight Thoughts: Cage Warriors Manchester
Ater the smoke had cleared on Saturday night at the Bowlers exhibition centre. Cage Warriors first trip into the fighting city of Manchester had been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. There were highlight wheel knockouts, creative submissions and a feast of high paced action to consume.
Drama surfaced before a blow was thrown, as with hours to spare, SBG man Martin Stapelton disappointingly had his fight removed from the card as his opponent Yassine Belhadj failed a pre fight medical. Ones mans loss was another man’s gain as teammate and talented Mancunian George Smith was moved from the prelims on to the main card. Smith took full advantage and put on a show for his home fans, finishing his man with a slick arm bar in the opening round.
The card was dominated by SBG Manchester who have resurfaced as a major player on the MMA Scene after a testing few years. With the sudden death of their leader and coach Karl Tanswel, it was an emotional night for the gym, a sort of coming out again party under the guidance of new head coach and former pro fighter Matt Inman.
The main event promised fireworks as local hero and Bantamweight Champion Jack Cartwright successfully defended his belt against the tough Manual Bilic. Bilic proved a tough nut to crack as he took the SBG man the distance for the first time in his Career. Cartwright showed his ferocious power dropping his foe with a perfectly timed left hook in the first round. Despite dominating the stand up, Bilic refused to be budged and would land the occasional overhand right to remind his man not to switch off. After a high paced five founder, the Bolton man was declared the victor and quickly made his intentions clear of competing at UFC Dublin.
The co main event saw SBG South Shields rising star Adam ‘Love Doctor’ Proctor show no love to his opponent, as he dominated Madars Fleminas to end his 7-fight unbeaten run. Proctor showed why he is being toughed as future Cage Warriors Champion.
A Liverpudlian man somehow managed to put a smile on the Manchester crowd as Next Generations Adam Wilson pulled of the submission of the night with a standing rear choke to put his man away. Teammate Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett showed his delight for his teammate. Wilson looks a hot prospect.
Former middleweight champion James Webb returned to winning ways as he dismantled his opponent to claim a unanimous decision.
The wow moment of the night went to Irish Prospect Paul Hughes who starred on the prelims. Hughes sent the crowd wild as he laned a destructive high leg kick to send his man to sleep, before calmly walking off and telling everyone his belief that he will be a double Cage Warriors and UFC champion.
After a long night Cage Warriors Manchester sent the masses home with a smile on their faces. World class prospects were born, and the champion showed why he is one of the hottest properties on the British MMA scene.
