Raymison Bruno can solidify his position as one of Europe’s top flyweights at AFL 19
This weekend AFL returns with AFL 19, the event takes place in Las Palmas and is probably the promotion’s biggest show yet. The card is set with 5 title fights with a Spaniard in each title bout. In the flyweight title fight, Brazil’s Raymison Bruno looks to defend the title he won back at AFL 12 and upset the home crowd.
“Formiga” made his presence known back at Celtic Gladiator 19 when he handed Pietro Menga his first pro loss. The fight headlined the event and was Menga’s first fight since being cut from the UFC, despite having no fights in the promotion. It was expected Menga would pick up the win in front of a home crowd but Bruno shocked the home crowd and took home a one-sided decision victory.
The Brazilian has been fighting reasonable level competition and has looked like a solid prospect ever since leaving the regional scene. His sole loss is a challenge for the Tech-Krep FC bantamweight title. The loss showed he was a much stronger fighter at 125 and he has remained at the lower weight class since.
Prior to this weekend, Bruno has only featured once for AFL in a challenge for the title which he is defending at AFL 19. He won the bout convincingly last time out and will be hoping to repeat this against Kevin Cordero.
Cordero went 3-1 last year to move his record to 7-2. His sole loss was at Cage Warrior 96 against Liam Gittins. Having won his two previous bouts with AFL it was enough to earn him a title shot this weekend. Cordero has proven tricky on the mat with all three wins last year coming via submission. This bout will certainly be his toughest test to date.
If “Formiga” can take control of the fight and perform as he did in his last bout it could certainly prove he is one of the top flyweights across Europe. With all the uncertainty around the UFC’s flyweight division, a call up to the promotion is questionable, however, a win could certainly put him in prime position to tackle some of the best fighters other promotions around have to offer.
Here are some highlights of the fighter from the AFL YouTube channel.
