UFC 235: Garbrandt vs Munhoz added

Cody Garbrandt (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will face Pedro Munhoz (17-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at UFC 235

UFC 235 takes place March 2nd, 2019 in Las Vegas. My word, it is shaping up to be a great card. Possibly a potential card of the year before it even really gets going. Yesterday, news broke that Jon Jones vs. Anthony Smith was in the works for UFC 235. Also, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani broke Tyron Woodley facing Kamaru Usman for the Welterweight title. Today, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reported that Cody Garbrandt (11-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will face Pedro Munhoz (17-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at the event also.

The Team Alpha Male product Cody Garbrandt is coming off the first two losses in his MMA career. Both came at the hands of current 135 pound title holder and former teammate TJ Dillashaw. These losses are sure to burn hard in the back of Garbrandts mind. Garbrandt will be looking to get his career back on track and stay at the top of the division.

Since his losses to Dillashaw, many will forget just how dominant Garbrandt was against Dominik Cruz. Cruz had long been seen as the unmovable king of the 135 pound division. Although when he returned, he would run rings around his opponents (bar TJ Dillashaw, which was a highly contested decision) until he faced Garbrandt. Garbrandt managed to strike and break dance his way to a decision victory for the 135 title. Knocking down Cruz numerous times in the process, something we had not seen before.

Many thought the new bantamweight king would be at the top of the mountain for some time. Unfortunately for the young then-undefeated champ, he was toppled in his first attempted defense by Dillashaw and was knocked out after hurting Dillashaw himself. It was a great fight and the rematch was highly anticipated. Garbrandt again came up short in the rematch. Even quicker this time and was TKO’d in the first round.

Facing Garbrandt at UFC 235 is Pedro Munhoz. Munhoz, a ten fight UFC veteran, is coming off an impressive victory over Bryan Caraway. He comes to the fight having never been finished and only losing to top competition like John Dodson, Raphael Assuncao, and Jimmie Rivera in decisions. He is currently ranked 9th in a stacked division and he will be looking to leapfrog to the top of the division by beating Garbrandt.

With the division on notice currently as Dillashaw is fighting for the flyweight title this month a new top contender such as Munhoz could get in the mix for the next bantamweight title fight. Although, Dominik Cruz and Raphael Assuncao might have something to say about that.

UFC 235 also has Tyron Woodley vs. Kamaru Usman, Robbie Lawler vs. Ben Askren, Diego Sanchez vs. Mickey Gall, Jeremy Stephens vs. Zabit Magomedsharipov and the aforementioned Jones vs Smith. It really is looking like a potential card of the year. Let’s hope the trend continues through 2019.
