UFC 249 Cancelled — Reaction
After many twists and turns with opponent changes and location secrecy, UFC 249 has finally been cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe.
Initially, the event was scheduled to take place in Brooklyn, New York but after the emergence of the pandemic, the event was thrown into turmoil. On March 18, the New York State Athletic Commission announced that the event would not be sanctioned to take place in Brooklyn. UFC president Dana White then revealed that he had a new location confirmed but would be keeping it a secret.
Khabib Nurmagomedov announced on April 1 that he would not be competing in the bout against Tony Ferguson due to the travel ban in place in his home country of Russia. Top contender Justin Gaethje then stepped in to replace the Russian and the new fight was set to take place for the Interim Lightweight belt and with a brand new undercard in place for April 18.
However, eight days out from the event, the UFC announced that they were forced to cancel the event due to a request from broadcaster ESPN and Disney. UFC 249 and all other upcoming events have now been postponed.
