UFC 250 in tweets
UFC 250 is in the books and we witnessed a stacked main card of fantastic fights in Las Vegas at the UFC Apex. Kicking off the main card was a highly anticipated bantamweight bout between Eddie Wineland and the ever entertaining Sean O’Malley. As the fight started, it was Wineland who was controlling the smaller cage but O’Malley fainted a uppercut which forced Eddie to drop his hands and over came a right hand which put the lights out of the veteran as ‘The Suga Show’ walked away.
Up next was a welterweight showdown between Neil Magny and Anthony Rocco Martin. This was a step up for Martin but he was the sharper fighter throughout the first round with the smaller octagon playing a big part. Grappling was the main facet on show as the fight went on, and both men were having success in the exchanges but as they went on, Martin was starting to fade with his mouth wide open. In the third round, Neil Magny turned up the pressure and dominated the last 5 minutes as he worked his way towards a unanimous decision victory in Las Vegas.
A potential number one contender bout was next up as elite bantamweights Aljamain Sterling and Cory Sandhagen squared off. Within the first 30 seconds, Sterling already had the back of Sandhagen, threatening a submission which Cory resisted but he couldn’t stop the second one as ‘The Funkmaster’ sunk in a rear naked choke to make one hell of a statement to the division and announce himself as the next man in line for the 135lb belt.
The co-main event was here as former champion Cody Garbrandt faced off against Raphael Assunção at bantamweight. After a long layoff and a switch of camps, Cody looked fantastic in the first round with Raphael having trouble closing the distance and Garbrandt was landing low kicks constantly. ‘No Love’ was looking as good as he ever had in his career and as the second round was closing, he dipped his level and launched an overhand right which put Assunção out and face first on the canvas. The KO was locked at 4:59 and with a knockout like that, he has put himself right back into contention in the bantamweight division.
The womens featherweight title was on the line in the main event of the evening, as the greatest womens fighter of all time Amanda Nunes was aiming to become the first fighter to defend two belts in different divisions at the same time as she faced Canadian challenger Felicia Spencer. The champion took control right from the off and landed two good shots which opened up two cuts and the first round was a blowout. Nunes was controlling the pace in the second and was beating Spencer to the punch while also successfully completing a couple of takedowns as she dominated the first 10 minutes.
The third round was much of the same, with Amanda chopping away at the lead leg of Felicia with the Canadian struggling to move as freely as she would like. Amanda Nunes was putting on a striking clinic against Spencer. The fight was becoming hard to watch as Nunes was battering Spencer who was too tough for her own good and many questioned how she was still standing with all the unanswered strikes. The doctor was called in towards the end to evaluate the damage dealt but she was deemed able to continue somehow. As we raced towards the final bell, Amanda Nunes had cemented her legacy even more as she made history. ‘And Still’ echoed from the mouth of Bruce Buffer as Nunes remained the champion. There is a real lack of contenders at both Bantamweight and Featherweight, so what’s next for The Lioness?
