Pros react to UFC DC.

UFC DC is in the books and it was a great return to action after a couple of weeks off. Kicking off the main card was a pair of Bantamweights as Ricky Simon squared off against Rob Font. Font’s Boxing was on full show as he often landed on Simon who had a fantastic opening round. Font controlled his emotions to grind out a unanimous decision victory on the judge’s scorecards.

Next up was another bantamweight bout between rising star Song Yadong and Cody Stamann. The fight went the distance as we witnessed a wrestling heavy action-packed 15 minutes. Song Yadong had a point deducted in the first as he landed an illegal knee to a downed opponent. As we went to the scorecards, the consensus was that Cody Stamann had done enough especially with the docked point for his opponent. 2 of the 3 judges saw the fight as a 28-28 draw as Stamann was stunned in the cage.

A pivotal women’s bantamweight matchup was next up as Aspen Ladd was facing Yana Kunitskaya. Both women were only a couple of wins away from earning a crack at the queen of the women’s game in Amanda Nunes. In the first two rounds, both women had their spells as they grappled near the cageside and Ladd had a late surge in round 1 and saw the round out on top. After a rousing speech from her coach before the start of the final round, Ladd came racing out and landed a left hook which put Kunitskaya down and like Ladd does, she finished the fight devastatingly.

The Heavyweights were on deck as the ‘Skyscraper’ Stefan Struve was returning from retirement to take on Ben Rothwell. Struve started well and wobbled Rothwell with a high left kick and the decision to come out of retirement was looking to bed a good one. However, towards the end of the first round, Rothwell kicked Struve in the groin and instantly the ‘Skyscraper’ was rolling around in pain. He took the 5 minutes allotted time to recover much to the displeasure of the DC crowd. Once again, this time in the second round, Rothwell landed another low blow and like the first time, Struve was visibly in discomfort. Rothwell had a point deducted, and from the restart, he was a man on a mission. He landed a series of strikes which hurt Struve and the referee was forced to step in and save Struve for another day.

The co-main event was upon us as Cynthia Calvillo was squaring off against the streaking Marina Rodriguez. Calvillo missed weight by 4.5 pounds on Friday morning and Rodriguez made her feelings clear to the American during their staredown. The body kicks by Rodriguez were causing trouble for Calvillo and the Muay Thai specialist was starting to pull away as we headed into the third round. In the final period, Cynthia Calvillo found an extra gear as she poured on the pressure and was handing out brutal ground and pound and was seconds away from the fight being stopped but Rodriguez survived and ended up finishing the round on top. For the second time in the night, the bout was ruled a majority draw with the judges scoring the last round 10-8 in favour of Calvillo.

The highly anticipated main event was finally here as heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Jairzinho Rozenstruik squared off in DC, Washington. Overeem controlled Rozenstruik for 20 minutes whether that be on the ground or even on the feet. ‘The Reem’ landed a few clean hard shots which Rozenstruik shook off and kept walking forward. Overeem was 4 rounds up going into the last round and was 6 seconds away from winning the fight when Rozenstruik landed a left-right combination which dropped Overeem and as he shot straight back up, he stumbled into the cage and the referee deemed him unable to continue as Jairzinho Rozenstruik announced his arrival as an elite heavyweight and proceeded to call out Francis Ngannou.
