UFC Newark: A night full of knockouts, submissions and disappointments

Saturday was a wild night in Newark, New Jersey.

It´s fair to say quite a lot of people wanted “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (28-14-1) to knock Colby Covington (15-1) out, with Covington becoming a largely disliked personality in the sport. But nothing further from reality, it wasn’t even a competitive fight. Colby dominated the former welterweight champion in all of 5 rounds, scoring takedowns over and over again, especially in the earlier rounds, not letting him breath with a high volume of strikes and showing a formidable cardio. The disappointing performance saw next to no punches being thrown by the former champ, it´s almost like he didn’t even wanted to be there. It’s strange to compare that performance to the Robbie Lawler we knew from the fights against MacDonald, Kosheck, Ellenberger. Now, it´s only matter of time for the UFC to confirm a date for Covington to fight against the current champion Kamaru Usman, it´s time to settle the beef.

In addition to this, in a very short but intense fight, Jim Miller (31-13-1) put Clay Guida (25-16) to sleep on a guillotine in the first 58 seconds of the first round.

Furthermore, young talent Nasrat Haqparast (11-2) from Germany/Afghanistan, who counted with the legendary Georges St-Pierre in his corner, knocked out viciously the brazilian fighter Joaquim Silva (11-3) with an overhand on the 2nd round.

Gerald Meerschaert (29-11) submitted Trevin Giles (11-2) with a guillotine choke in the 3rd round, earning his 21st submission victory on a very close fight.

Following submissions, Antonina Shevchenko (8-1), Valentina´s sister, bounced back from his first career loss against Roxanne Modafferi in April. The fighter from Kyrgyzstan caught Lucie Pudilova (8-5) on a rear naked choke in round 2.

Another fight worth mentioning was Scott Holtzman (13-3) vs Dong Hyung Ma (16-10-3), both lightweights put on impressive performance where the Korean´s eye swelled up rapidly early in the 1st round due to Holtzman strikes. Finally, before starting the 3rd round, the doctor stopped the fight because of Ma eye´s injury.
