Pro's react to UFC San Antonio.

As the UFC hit Texas this weekend, we saw a pivotal Welterweight bout headline a stacked main card. Kicking off the main card was a pair of heavyweight veterans as Andrei Arlovski and Ben Rothwell squared off. Arlovski was looking for his first win in 4 fights and over a year as he stepped in the octagon against Ben Rothwell. The latter returned in March after a 3-year layoff due to a USADA suspension with a loss to Blaogy Ivanov. In a fight which Arlovski found a home for his shots throughout the 15 minutes and with Ben Rothwell’s face pure crimson, there was no surprise to see ‘The Pitbull’ take home a unanimous decision victory on the judge’s scorecards.

Next up was veteran Francisco Trinaldo going up against Texas’ own Alexander Hernandez. Trinaldo has been in the UFC for 7 years and has amassed a 13-5 record and was looking to stop Hernandez getting back into the win column. ‘The Great’ suffered a reality check back in January against future UFC Hall of Famer Donald Cerrone and was looking to return with a win in his home state. After going the distance, it was Hernandez who prevailed on the scorecards. UFC San Antonio starts with 9 straight decisions, breaking the previous record of 8. If the next fight goes the distance this card will tie the record for most decisions on a card.

Another lightweight bout was up next as the two tallest fighters in the division faced off as James Vick went up against Dan Hooker. UFC Veteran Vick has slid to two losses in a row since his 4 fight win streak back in 2017 and is coming off a loss to Paul Felder. Across the cage was Dan Hooker who was also looking to get back into the win column after a valiant effort against Edson Barboza back in December 2018. After 9 straight decisions, we were due a finish and Dan Hooker delivered just that. Hooker caught Vick with a left hook which put The American out instantly and with that Hooker was back in the win column.

Controversial heavyweight Greg Hardy was up next as he faced Juan Adams. After a debut which resulted in a DQ against Allen Crowder, Hardy got his first UFC to win against Dmitry Smolyakov in April with a first-round KO. After starting his UFC career 2-0, Adams suffered a setback against Arjan Singh Bhullar in May. This fight lasted just 45 seconds as Adams went for a single leg and Hardy landed loads of unanswered strikes and the referee stepped in.

In the co-main event, UFC Veterans were going up against each other as Walt Harris went up against Aleksei Oleinik at heavyweight. Harris has been inconsistent since making his UFC debut in 2014 with a record of 6-5-1. Harris was aiming to make it 3 wins out of his last 4 with a win over the submission specialist Aleksei Oleinik. A veteran of 23 years, Oleinik is coming off a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem earlier in the year. The fight lasted just 12 seconds as Harris landed a flying knee followed by a sweet left hand which dropped Oleinik and The American finished the fight.
In the main event of the evening, Rafael Dos Anjos was looking to cement himself at the top of the welterweight ranking against the streaking Leon Edwards. Since losing out on the Interim Welterweight Title to Colby Covington, he has gone 1-1 with his last fight earning a submission victory over divisional newcomer Kevin Lee.

On the other side of the cage is England’s own Leon Edwards who is riding a 7 fight win streak and the consensus is that Edwards has been underrated while on this run. He beat Gunnar Nelson back in London in March and a win over RDA could put Edwards right into title contention at 170lbs. Leon Edwards put in his best performance of his career showing fantastic fight IQ and finding a home early for his elbows which opened up a significant cut on the right eye of Dos Anjos. Edwards won every round and saw out a unanimous decision victory and went on to call out Jorge Masvidal after their altercation in London back in March.
