Pro's react to a historic night in China

European MMA fans were treated on Saturday as we all woke up nice and early to watch UFC Shenzhen. Kicking off the main card was Mizuki Inoue against Wu Yanan at Women’s flyweight. Inoue was making her UFC debut after impressing on the local circuit and was looking to put on a show in front of the Chinese fans. Yunan on the other hand was 1-1 in the UFC after beating Lauren Meuller via submission in November 2018. In a fight which was tough to judge as both fighters struggled to gain control of the fight at certain points in the rounds. As the fight went to the scorecards, no one quite knew which way the judges were going to go. It was Mizuki Inoue who got the nod and was successful on her UFC debut.

Next up was a welterweight bout between Kanan Song and Derrick Krantz. Song was coming off a fight of night bout against Alex Morono in November 2018 but ultimately went on to lose the fight and was looking to get back on track in his home country. After impressing Dana White on ‘Looking for a fight’ earlier in the year, Derrick Krantz made his debut 3 months ago against veteran Vicente Luque on short notice and lost the fight. Both men were taking their time in the first round, but it was the second where it started to heat up with Krantz being relentless for the takedown. As the fight drew on, both fighters were visibly gassed and with no power on any punches, it fizzled out. China’s own Song won the fight via unanimous decision on the judges scorecards.

A pair of flyweight’s were up next as Kai Kara France squared off against Mark De La Rosa. France has made a 2-0 start in the UFC was ranked 10 in the division so a win in China would move him up towards the top 5. De La Rosa was making the move back down to flyweight after a 1-1 stint at Bantamweight and he was ranked at 14 at 125lbs. It was clear to see that France had the power while Mark was looking to take the fight to ground. At the start of the second, Kara France dropped De La Rosa with a beautiful overhand right but it didn’t seem to bother the American. The third round saw volume from France and he saw out a unanimous decision victory to extend his winning run to 8 and a big fight awaits him towards the end of the year.

Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos was on a 7 fight win streak ahead of his fight agains Li Jingliang in Shenzhen. Dos Santos was coming off a win against rising start Curtis Millender in March and was looking to silence the Chinese crowd. Li has won 6 of his last 7 fights, most recently against David Zawada back in November 2018. A win for Jingliang would move him into the divisions top 15. Towards the end of the first, Li landed a straight right hand which dropped Dos Santos and Li finished the round on top. As the fight was coming to an end, Jingliang landed a short uppercut which troubled Dos Santos and from there, Li piled on the pressure and landed a number of unanswered shots which forced the referee to step in as the crowd erupted.

In the main event of the evening, we saw the first championship bout in China as strawweight champion Jessica Andrade was looking to defend her belt for the first time in enemy territory against China’s own Weili Zhang. With the power that Andrade possesses, Zhang was not to stand in front of her. However, as Jessica was rushing forward, Zhang landed a counter right which wobbled Andrade. While in the clinch, Weili Zhang landed brutal knees and short elbows which was troubling the Brazilian. As Andrade backed up, Zhang landed a right hand which dropped the champion and referee Leon Roberts stepped in to the delight of the crowd. History was made as Weili Zhang became the first UFC Champion from China.
