What’s Next? UFC: Singapore Thoughts and Results

by Lance Carpenter

UFC Singapore was a showcase night for young, upcoming talent and slick submissions, headlined by my favorite fight of the year in Demian Maia and Ben Askren. Here are the full results, some quick thoughts and fights to make in the future.

  • It is a true joy to see a fighter utilize a discipline so purely. I’m of two mindsets with Demian Maia. I hope he either gets a few legacy fights and retires in Brazil before he’s 43, or, if he’s up for it, gets one more title push under his belt. Book him against Diego Sanchez for legacy, or Rafael dos Anjos for title contention.
  • I believe Ben Askren can be the UFC Welterweight Champion, but he needs to improve his striking defense. I think he can win without effective striking with pressure and his relentless man-strength. A rematch with Robbie Lawler should be step one.
  • If he keeps this up, Ciryl Gane will be the UFC Heavyweight Champion within 2 years. I love everything about this guy. Book him against someone like Shamil Abdurakhimov ASAP.
  • Beneil Dariush is still a problem at lightweight.
  • Can we get Muslim Salikov vs Michel Pereira for the Absurdity Title please?
  • Evloev and Palvovich are impressive prospects with championship potential.
