UFC 236 in tweets
UFC 236 is in the books and it did not disappoint. We saw 2 new Interim Champions crowned and fight considered to be one of the greatest fights in history.
In the main event of the evening, the Interim Lightweight Championship was up for grabs. Max Holloway was coming up from 145lbs to fight perennial contender Dustin Poirier. The fight was nearly over in the first as ‘The Diamond’ connected with a series of heavy blows which had Holloway stunned and out on his feet. The featherweight champion continued to march forward despite the early dominance, and saw the fight out strong. However it was Poirier who managed to get the decision via the judges scorecards and was crowned the Interim Lightweight Champion.
In the co-main event, it was the Interim Middleweight title on the line as Kelvin Gastelum went up against rising star Israel Adesanya. Through the first four rounds, Gastelum and Adesanya showed why they deserved this title opportunity. Kelvin hurt Adesanya early on and to the surprise of some it was Gastelum who was winning the striking exchanges with the Kiwi. Adesanya dropped Gastelum 3 times in the final round en route to a decision victory which now sets up a date with the 185lbs champion Robert Whittaker.
Next up was Eryk Anders against Khalil Rountree Jr in a light heavyweight bout. Both fighters were coming off losses and were looking to get back into the winning column. Rountree dropped Anders 4 times in Round 2 on his way to a unanimous decision victory. A pivotal welterweight contest was up next as Dwight Grant and Alan Jouban were looking to break into the division’s top 15. In a fight with little action, It was Grant who saw out the fight with a split decision win and moves to 2-1 in the UFC. Kicking off the main card was another 205lbs matchup with Ovince Saint Preux rematching Nikita Krylov. OSP beat Krylov back in 2014 via Von Fleux choke. However, it was roles reversed this time, as the Ukrainian submitted OSP via a rear naked choke and saw himself enter the top 15 in the rankings.
