UFC London in tweets
The UFC visited London yet again on Saturday night, with 12 fights on show. In the main event, Darren Till squared off against UFC veteran Jorge Masvidal. From the first second, the fight was full of action. Till floored Masvidal at the start of the first but the American recovered and saw out the round. However, it was in the second round in which ‘Gambred’ took over and as he stuttered forward he landed an almighty left hook over the top which instantly knocked Till out cold. The crowd was silenced as Masvidal grabbed his first win since January 2017.
The co-main event saw ranked contenders Leon Edwards go up against Gunnar Nelson. Edwards was looking to cement himself as a serious contender in the 170lbs division and did exactly that. Edwards dropped Nelson with a short elbow on his way to a controversial split decision victory, with many thinking it should of been a unanimous decision. Top light-heavyweight contenders Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes were next up with many predicting the fight would not go the distance. However, it was a close hard fought matchup which went to the judges scorecards and Reyes took the split decision and now improves to 11-0 (5-0 UFC).
London’s own Nathaniel Wood was looking to continue his rise through the bantamweight ranking, as he went up against José Quiñónez. Despite a sloppy first round, Wood managed to get the fight to the floor and eventually took the back of Quiñónez and locked in a Rear Naked Choke and got the victory. Another welterweight clash was up next, as Claudio Silva took on Danny ‘Hot Chocolate’ Roberts. After a closely fought first 2 rounds, Silva managed to lock in a Armbar and Robert’s screamed in pain which resulted in a verbal submission and Claudio took his winning run to 13. Kicking off the main card was a potential FOTN as Jack Marshman fought fellow Welshman John Phillips at middleweight. It was constant back and forth action with Marshman claiming bragging rights in Wales as he saw out a split decision victory.
